After graduating summa cum laude with a B.S. in education from the State University of New York College at Buffalo, Mary attended the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law, from which she received her J.D.  Mary began her legal career at Gannon, Gannon & Sullivan in Buffalo, where she practiced primarily in the areas of family law and criminal defense.  She litigated divorce actions; served as the law guardian for hundreds of vulnerable children in abuse/neglect, juvenile delinquency, and custody/visitation matters; and tried dozens of felony cases to verdict, including several homicides.

Since moving to Texas in 2000, Mary has focused on healthcare law and has counseled many providers regarding Anti-Kickback, HIPAA, Stark, and other regulatory issues; medical billing disputes; credentialing; employment contracts; licensing and peer review matters; and treatment of non-compliant patients.  She has also offered guidance to small businesses regarding entity formation; employee hiring, promotion, and termination policies and procedures; non-compete and non-disclosure agreements; and requests for accommodation under the ADA.

Mary lives in Addison with her husband of 25 years, Jim Halter, and their dogs and cats.  In addition to being active in animal rescue, Mary has volunteered as an on-air reader of newspapers and periodicals for the visually impaired with the Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service and North Texas Reading & Radio Resource and has counseled clients through the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program, which named her the Outstanding Volunteer in the East and West Legal Clinics in 2003 and 2004.
